David Tanenbaum

David M. Tanenbaum, the Osler-Loucks Professor in Science in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Pomona College, grew up in Claremont and has been actively involved in Claremont Hillel since 1975. He teaches a wide range of physics and interdisciplinary courses and serves as a liaison to the Environmental Analysis, Science, Technology & Society, and Public Policy Analysis programs. A former department chair and Associate Dean for Research and Infrastructure, he played a key leadership role during the pandemic. His research focuses on condensed matter physics and materials science, with a particular emphasis on next-generation solar cell technologies designed to complement or replace silicon solar cells. He collaborates with research groups in the U.S. and Europe and has taken research sabbaticals near Copenhagen, Barcelona, and Southern Denmark. Tanenbaum earned his B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College (1988), his M.S. (1991) and Ph.D. (1995) in Physics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and joined the Pomona College faculty in 1997.
