Diane Tickton Schuster

Diane Tickton Schuster, a longtime resident of Claremont, has been dedicated to supporting Jewish life at the Claremont Colleges alongside her husband, Jack, since 1977, with previous involvement at Tulane and UC Berkeley. They have also held leadership roles at Temple Beth Israel of Pomona and the Jewish Federation of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. An independent scholar in Jewish education, Diane is an affiliated scholar at the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis University, where she recently managed two research projects and published Portraits of Jewish Learning: Viewing Contemporary Jewish Education Close-In (2019) and Portraits of Adult Jewish Learning: Making Meaning and Many Tables (2022). Her earlier works include Jewish Lives, Jewish Learning: Adult Jewish Learning in Theory and Practice, A Journey of Heart and Mind, and Women’s Lives Through Time: Educated American Women of the Twentieth Century. Diane earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan, M.S.W. from UC Berkeley, and Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University. From 1987 to 2007, she taught at California State University-Fullerton, Brandeis University's Institute for Informal Jewish Education, Hebrew Union College-Los Angeles, and the American Jewish University. She is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Jewish Education.
