Yuval Avnur

Scripps Philosophy Professor

Yuval Avnur has been teaching at Scripps College since 2008, where he has also served in various faculty governance roles and as director of the Scripps College Humanities Institute. He teaches a wide variety of topics in philosophy, including the history of modern philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of religion. His scholarly work includes numerous essays and chapters on skepticism, contemporary issues concerning the spread of information, the history of philosophy (especially, recently, Blaise Pascal), and philosophy of religion.

He is also the author of The Skeptic and the Veridicalist (Cambridge University Press), and two forthcoming books, Why Read Pascal Today? (Cambridge University Press), and The Possibility of an Afterlife (Oxford University Press). In addition, he is editor of the journal Midwest Studies in Philosophy, and co-editor of Introduction to Philosophy: Classical and Contemporary Readings, 10th edition (Oxford University Press) and The Blackwell Companion to Pascal (Wiley-Blackwell).

Originally from Israel, Avnur moved to the US at age 7, and now lives in Claremont with his wife (an illustrator) and two kids.
